I have lived in Austin for a few months now and don't have a single restaurant I can recommend to anyone coming into town for the first time.  I live near Cedar Park and don't go downtown often.  I have tried some Mexican and BBQ places around the Anderson Mill area and they have all been bad.  Memphis had much better examples of both of those foods and I have yet to find a place that I can even tolerate, much less recommend.  So, this is for those of you who can recommend places to eat for those coming into town.  I hear good things about Salt Lick BBQ, but I have not had a chance to try it yet.

Torchy's Tacos is okay.  Not the best taco joint but good enough.

Carrob's Cafe downtown is pretty cool for a tiny, hard to spot gem.

ThunderCloud Subs is tasty and can usually be found not too far from pretty much anywhere.

Salt Lick's BBQ.  Even the Round Rock location is almost as good as the original.

Iron Cactus (Tex Mex)

Stubb's BBQ

Juan in a Million

The Shady Grove (Awesome hippie joint)

Kerbey Lane

Round Rock Donuts (best donuts I've ever had)

Really any of this places I would like to try (if I have enough time) Coming from Jacksonville we don't have anything you all have other than the regular MCD,Taco Bell, Burger King....etc. I was so excited to learn that there is a Jack in the box located about 15min(walk) from the hotel I'm staying at.

Thats a surprise...normally they're closer then that.  Once you go Jack, you'll never go back.

That's a 15min walk from the hotel, if driving it's only like 5mins. Always heard good things about them.
