The most amusing part of Much Ado About Nothing was noting, "Man, Joss either spend a couple bucks on your home or increase the production value, the most unremarkable estate ever." That's not a knock because I truly believe Joss is one of those New Yorkers used to living a lifestyle of just a loaf of bread and a typewriter. Despite coming from a family experienced in TV, the guy is very grounded.

While not a homer, I thought Nathan Fillion was great as Dogberry (filmed in the cellar) and added some levity to the irritable character. Acker enjoyable as Beatrice but Alexis Denisof, I just couldn't buy his performance as Benedick. It's a enjoyable watch but nothing you need to pay theatre tickets to see. Rent, Netflix, stream, etc.

Skipping World War Zzzzzzz...I am sure there are great sequences but I can't subscribe to calling it the title of the book with very little to compare it to. Zombies are fascinating in terms of outbreak of disease, it's more of the rate of infection and reaction to survive that is intriguing not saving the goddam world.

I plan to see This is the End. This is the Summer where the mega blockbusters are NOT the stand outs. It's really indies and top shelf low brow humor.

I really really want to see Much Ado, but I have a hard time believing that Joss can top Kenneth Branagh in at least one aspect...

Thoughts on Joss' Much Ado About Nothing?

Stone's politics annoys the fuck out of me.

I was at 92Y for his promotion of the Untold History of the USA with Oliver "Gall" Stone. Couldn't believe the author and Stone put a sympathetic view of Stalin's Russia. Want to know why the United States feared Russia before, during, and after WWII? Stalin killed MILLIONS of people >5M many of which were Jewish. I nearly flipped out of my chair when the author of the book called the United States, the Yankees and the Russians, the Mets. Seriously?!?!

Doc, sounds like a lecture I attended at UMich given by Oliver Stone. He spent the evening railing about Hollywood's money machine and then talked about how proud he was that his films have made so much cash. Of course, Oliver Stone is one the biggest hypocrites out there ;)

@c clark

Fans of the book will prob be annoyed by the movie because basically it's gone the summer blockbuster route. That being said, the only way to translate the book to film would be documentary-style (talking heads, a bit of footage here and there, etc), and I doubt Hollywood would have ever gone that route. None of the characters from the book are in the film, but there are few pieces (no pun intended) that made it...of course, even those were changed. The zombies are more 28 Days Later than Walking Dead, and what they tried to do was show how they act as a swarm (like birds all turning at once). There's no gore...NONE. These zombies tend to bite someone and run off to bite someone else, so I guess in the zombie genre, it'd land about 5-6 because the visuals are cool, but plot points are at times ridiculous and the zombies don't actually eat anyone lol.

On one hand, Spielberg is right with the jobs going to other countries. On the other hand, look Spielberg and Lucas were hated by their peers like Jean-Luc Godard for creating the modern market of blockbusters where families overpay for 2 hrs of escapism.

The other side to this coin, BAD, cheap franchises like Paranormal Activity, Identity Thief, Scary Movie make so much money that they make up for those bombs.

That's the humor in Hollywood, follow up a blockbuster with a cheap bad horror...

I read that Spielberg had that 'dire warning' about the film industry collapsing in on itself due to the rise of production costs, but I didn't know that Lucas was still peddling his bs about his failed WW2 X-Wing movie.

I see where Spielberg is coming from, he's making a good point, but it's hard to be sympathetic to the messenger when, as Ron put it, he and his pal Lucas got the ball rolling to get where we are today.

I wonder what JJ Abrams would have to say =P
