Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite) is a Brazilian movie which screenplay was written by the same guy who wrote City of God.
It is a violent movie about Rio's BOPE (Special Ops Battallion) that engages in shooting battles with Rio's drug traffickers at the Favelas.
The movie is violent - yet based on real events.
It was a huge hit in Brazil yet people still discuss whether its portrayal of real events are too simplistic and right-leaning. People seemed to like it due to its no-bullshit approach to serious issues.
It had an impact throwout Brazilian society so that now there are more police force on the streets and the population feels somewhat safer.
It seems like it wasn't viewed (or barely) in North America yet I would like Americans to watch and see for themselves whether it is a good movie or not.
Tropa de Elite 2 (or T2) is scheduled to open in October 2010 in Brazil.
