I wrote a blog about this a while back
, and I've been thinking about writing another more detailed and specified one about character creation and casting opportunities for non-white actors*. But that's its own discussion. This one is intended to be about The Last Airbender
There's obviously no question of where I stand on this. Frankly, this movie is one of the most egregious examples in recent history of Asian actors getting the shaft in Hollywood in my opinion. To make matters worse, everything about the marketing implies that The Last Airbender
is nothing more than shallow FX-driven bullshit (seriously, they've gone out of their way to hide any ACTUAL acting from Noah Ringer in every single clip I've seen) and the "in 3-D
" isn't helping. So, what looks like a force-fucking of the first season into a 2 hr.runtime coupled with far too much evidence of unintentional and institutionalized racism makes it impossible for me to throw any support behind this movie.
What're your thoughts?
*- character creation may factor into the discussion, but my thought is that it won't take it over.
