If it's crap ... We'll tell you
What's everyone's thoughts on Magna Carta Holy Grail?
As a huge Jay-Z fanatic, I'm not too impressed. Some pretty nice tracks to bump to, but as a whole I don't feel it matches his previous efforts. He built it up so much with the interviews and the colossal title. The title insinuates that he had a huge classic in his hands. I think the production is what hurt the album the most. While I love Timbaland, I've never been a fan of their collaborative efforts (excluding Dirt Off Your Shoulders). I feel that while Jay loves Timbaland's beats, it hurts his lyrics because it always comes down to the same subject matter. And in this album, Timbaland produced almost 85% of the tracks. Jay could have definitely benefited from some Kanye West beats and possibly some big-time names in Jazz or Alternative to make the album much more intricate in terms of production. The production and instrumentals are what pushes Jay-Z's lyricism. That's why he did so well in Watch The Throne with Kanye. There are a handful of tracks on this album that I do love, but the average fan will just be hand-picking songs here and there. The whole effort didn't meet the hype at all.
What are your thoughts?
average album. huge fan and I think he really sold on this one but I did enjoy a few songs.
Well in the words of Lupe Fiasco, "I took 2 sips of the holy grail turned around and spit it out." That pretty much sums it up for me.
