Permalink Reply by south-side panda on October 11, 2012 at 11:40am I like most of the short stories in the film but not the Ti West one that suck ass. I like what they were going for in here but it did not really live up to the hype. This would be a HIGH MATINEE but the wrap around is so fucking bad that it knocks it down to a LOW MATINEE. If you are with a group of friends or even maybe a girlfriend it should entertain. If you want to see a good anthology film that is not for the 80's check out Trick r' Treat (2007) FULL PRICE.
Permalink Reply by Mark Johnston on October 14, 2012 at 11:14am I'm really not getting the whole "found footage" gimmick with this. For example... you've got a guy running away from that demon girl... he stumbles down the stairs and breaks his arms... and continues to look around, look around, look around... etc.
Why in the fuck would he be filming this? It's like the directors purposely maneuver the camera in a way where it's not a found footage film, but a first person film. I'm sure that VHS may be above average, but come on. Let's all get away from this found footage thing, yeah?
It's one giant excuse to slide hard work under the carpet. The only found footage movie I've liked since Blair Witch was Chronicle.
Permalink Reply by Mezza on October 16, 2012 at 1:14pm Atrocious. I'm a big fan of some of the guys involved as well.
The overarching story was trash. The glitch killer man was the dumbest thing I've seen in years, like a real bad student film. The Ti West segment was a slow burn to a fucking retarded ending (which I guess is his new shtick, even though I love HOTD). THe skype bit was kinda interesting, story was dull though.
That haunted house bit was awesome though, no doubt. And I liked that big eyed chick in the first segment. I found her rather attractive even though she chewed people up and ripped testicles off. The gore effects in general were real cool. They coulda toned it down with the douchy white guys and all the sex though, it just made the whole thing seem like a bad parody or something.
The shit is like 2 hours long as well. Fuck that noise.

It's always good practice to develop intelligence before you insult it. That's what I realized after watching this movie. This is the very reason why I'm so invariably tired of this "found footage" phase. It's 2012, and we're still getting these unbelievably cliche movies that follow the same exact format as Blair Witch. Each story is a copy of the next, just with difference faces and different circumstances.
Every "scare" is the same thing all throughout this 2 hour long string of unoriginality. Yes... it's 2 hours long. Every story starts out the same: faceless and unlikeable characters are happily going about their lives without a care in the world. And the sexual tones get old the minute they hit the screen. Every guy wants to be a sexual tyrannosaurus. They act like frat boys, they love boobs, blah blah blah. Then there's an awkward "What is that?" moment... then there's a quick moment of horror... then they're running away from it all the while flailing the camera around like it's a tether ball. Then it cuts off when the person gets killed. Yawn.
I get that this is the base for all found footage horror flicks, but I don't consider VHS anything that involves original film making. It's a movie, but it had zero original film making behind it. "Run through the woods, film your feet, film the wall, scream a lot." That's all this is. And I get that found footage movies have their fan base, it's just that there comes a time when it all becomes dull - stale - and impractical.
Directors' mind: "If we make these stories with the handheld format, we won't have to spend that much money. We will make it a movie about VHS tapes, which will give us an excuse to distort the footage and keep the camera as shaky as possible. We are geniuses."
VHS gets a 1/10 from me.
