If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Terminator 1 all the way! Gritty, low budget, brutal.
Terminator 2, big budget, glossy, silly and Edward Furlong was awful.
Just my opinion:)
I disagree about Edward Furlong. I think he makes that movie. He is that kid from that era. As for Terminator 2 being glossy, you've got that all wrong. It's still gritty, it's budget was less than 100 million as well, most of which went to developing new tech. It was practical and in your face. There's nothing glossy about it. Even the mental hospitals white walls are grimy and gritty. The practical effects, the model work, the puppetry.
If you want glossy look at Terminator 3. Most of the film takes place in broad daylight, the film stock is almost over exposed it's so bright, everything has a bright shiny sheen to it, including both terminators and that John Connor is by far the worst.
I think you need to rewatch T2 and really look at it again. Tell me how through all that gorgeous film grain it's a "glossy" movie.
I didn't mention t3 for a reason:) Anything after 2 was pure tripe.
I actually enjoyed t2 (at the time). But The Terminator will always hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps you're right and i should give it another go and seperate my childhood fascination with the first one.
DJ Kento you didn't mention which one you prefer. T2 then?
Terminator 2's budget was huge. 3 times the average film for 1991. If you really cannot see the gloss in T2 you were weaned in a different kind of film than I. The simple fact that Arnie is the 'hero' of the piece negates your claim that it is gritty, combine this with Furlongs character and his requests that the terminator does not do any terminating and you have the turning point in Camerons career from action man to family man.
All T2's night time scenes are bright as hell and over lit. It has none of the Chiaroscuro lighting that was present in the first film and completely fails to utilize shadow or an absence of light.
Wasn't terminator 2 the most expensive film ever made (at the time)?
T2's budget was $100 Million, exact, and yes, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. Part of this was the fact that from Green Light (without a Screenplay) to Release, the film only had about 7 months to be shot, chopped, and put in the can, thus necessitating the larger budget.
And, for the record, the worst John Connor was Christian Bale's iteration, in terms of a performance.
$100 million exact? $94 mil me thinks...
Bales iteration I feel should not be compared due the identity of the films helmer...
Bottom line, T1 is the best of the series.
Gift of the Magi i totally agree. I would almost consider The Terminator a horror film. Guy/robot after the girl. Even his cold, slow complacent nature reminded me of Michael Myers or Jason, slowly but methodically killing his victims without remorse.
As a child i found the scene where arnie steps out of the car and tramples on the toys horrific. Great and simple way to state this guy doesn't give a fuck and nothing will stop or alter his path to the destruction of the target.
Also the whole thing with him working his way thru the phonebook was nasty.
The police station shootout is right up there for me with the 'Heat' bank robbery:)
And don't get me started on Arnie 'understanding' crying... haha
1) What does T2's budget have to do with its quality?
2) The glossy look of T2 reflects the glossiness of its villain, the T1000.
3) T1 is equally silly. A giant wall of muscle with an Austrian accent as a stealth unit? Give me a break.
I prefer T1, but still, you didn't think this one through.
I also find Gift of the Magi statement about T2 not being a well-crafted movie ridiculous. Just compare it to any of the hundreds of mediocre action movies we get per year and you'll see a world of difference. The cinematography and editing alone make it better than most modern action movies.
