If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The original trilogy is amazing! It's the prequel trilogy that has ruined Star Wars for the world (**** YOU LUCAS!)!
So, just because millions of people tune in and buy memorabilia and DVDs and stuff that makes them classics? There goes my Twilight criticisms!
? I must have looked like a dick? Uh, no because the other folks I saw the movie with pretty much said the same thing. Plus, I don't know anyone that gets that worked up over someone not liking a movie as much as they do. I assume it's their prerogative to do so. As for me "forcing my opinion on the world" what is this site all about? Giving opinions on entertainment. Our own individual opinions. If you like something and I say I don't am I forcing my opinion on you? When I hear/heard people going on and on about how great The Dark Knight was/is are they forcing their opinion on me or just telling me what their opinion is?
Whenever someone tells me I need to do research to like a movie I'm always like, "What?" Do research to like a movie? This is especially the case when they invoke the trilogy (now the whateveritisyousayforsix-ilogy. Unlike most of the peeps who say this to me I saw each and everyone of the first movies when they first came out. Not years later on HBO or VHS or DVD but when they first came out. My opinion has not wavered. Special effects cool! The forest chase scene in ROTJ very, very cool. As for the fight scenes being superior it takes a lot more than someone doing acrobatic moves and twirling around to make a fight scene better (Darth Maul - extremely cool). But, for me to say any of them are great movies? Sorry, not gonna happen. I enjoyed them. Appreciate their social significance in pop culture and movies but can't say they're great. To me Star Wars is like The Beatles - good bud vastly over rated.
Your opinion is that the original Star Wars trilogy are overrated. I respectfully disagree.
When Star Wars erupted on the scene in 1977, it was hugely original in that it was a swashbuckling, fairytale set in space with state-of-the-art imagery to back it up. True, it was influenced by comic books such as Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers, but no-one had seen it done to this quality. Such a premise at the time was potentially disasterous, but it was executed with such flair in so many areas it blew many audience members away, becoming a phenomenon. The combination of great characters, the ground breaking special effects, the imagery (such as the convincing 'used future' look, and the opening scene) and accessiblity to a wide audience broke the mold for the Sci-Fi adventure genre, and remains unequalled there. And the second movie followed it up perfectly to satisfy most. RotJ was weaker, but by no means is it a bad movie.
You may not like the original Star Wars as much of others, but the sheer quality of the package they offer means I don't think they're overrated at all.
