Just read the news on yahoo.com, and am at a loss for words. We all know that video game movies are typically pretty terrible, and I think I'd be right in saying that most of us like Sam Raimi. So I am wondering if this news gives anyone else a little hope that the Warcraft movie will be any good.
I have said this time and time again to my friends, and to those who play Warcraft.
If done correctly, this movie will be fantastic. However, I feel as though there is only one way to tell this story correctly. It has to be told chronologically, from the start of the first Warcraft game (nearly two decades ago) with the opening of the Dark Portal and the invasion of the Orcish Horde. Tell the ENTIRE story, not just the story that started with the most recent and most popular game.
Everything I found was something about "three years after warcraft III ..." and the rest was pretty much only the whole backstory to the Warcraft universe. That's not a story, that's a scenario.
I bet I'm being a completely ignorant moron right now and all the WoW fans hate me but... if I should be right (Iron Man is right I'm a lazy bastard so I didn't do much research) I agree with The Projectionist: If you have to, do a Warcraft movie and tell the story from the beginning.
Warcrafts story is hard to explain it like describing a series of books basically there's a war between fractions called the horde and the alliance who have been at war forever. but then they have to unite against an alien demon army that is called the burning legion and lead by an evil titan, they win and make a truce. World of warcraft picks up 10 years after that that conflict when the pact they made starts to disappear and they start fighting again...thats the story in a nutshell.
Simply put, Kingfini is right with the story. That's basically the plot for ya, Lagomorph. The frist Warcraft game dealt with the opening of the Dark Portal, the invasion of the Orcish Horde, and the first great war between the humans and orcs. The second Warcraft is the forming of the Alliance between the seven human nations, high elves, and dwarves to fight the Orcish Horde and finally destroying the Dark Portal (which is eventually rebuilt). The third Warcraft is the forming of the Scourge, the invasion of the Burning Legion with their leader, Archimonde, and his eventual destruction when the Orcs and Humans (and Night Elves, introduced in this chapter) unite to combat him. This all sets up the story in the current World of Warcraft game, which takes place ten years after the destruction of Archimonde.
The first two chapters would not be that hard to put to film, but the third would be very difficult. There are so many new characters and races introduced that it would be a conceptual nightmare for any screenwriter.
