There was plenty of great metal albums in 2009. And alot of great news too. Here's high hopes that the new decade brings some kick ass albums, like the new Pig Destroyer album.
1. Mastodon - Crack the Skye

2. Every Time I Die - New Junk Aesthetic

3. God Forbid - Earthsblood

4. Kylesa - Static Tensions

5. Baroness - Blue Record

6. Behemoth - Evangelion

7. Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague

8. Kreator - Hordes of Chaos

9. Dethklok - Dethalbum II

10. The Binary Code - S/T

Never really liked that Behemoth album, it feels kinda empty to me.

I can't really do the top ten but here are some notables that I enjoyed:

Iskra - Bureval
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Portal - Swarth
Wormrot - Abuse
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Isis - Wavering Radiant
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II Dialogue With The Stars
Psyopus - Odd Senses
Isis are pretty, Sunn O))) are cool, Psyopus are crazy, and Portal are pretty crazy cool
Great list, alot of great underground bands, but I could never find myself to dig Wolves in the Throne Room thou.
I know it's probably the stock answer of 2009, but Crack the Skye really does get better and better the more I listen to it.
woah woah woah
where's "Endgame" by Megadeth? I love the hell out of that album... it's the best thing they've done since Rust in Peace.

hmm... I gotta give folk metal some love and add "From Afar" by Ensiferum, and "Karkelo" by Korpiklaani.

oooh, and my favorite debut albums have got to be "Profugus Mortis" by Blackguard, and "The Absence" by Luna Mortis.

I love your list though. I'm strongly considering seeing Behemoth this Friday.
End Game was okay, but not great. Yeah Rust in Peace is a thrash masterpiece, but I wouldn't compare the two.
Luna Mortis is such a great fell-good power metal band!
And fuck yeah for Behemoth!
OH I forgot 3 inches of Blood's latest release! that's good stuff too.
*feel-good
My favorite album of last year is easily "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" by Dream Theater, it is by far their best album since "Images and Words" (And yes, I actually liked Chaos in Motion).

And I agree, "Crack the Skye" was amazing, Mastodon is awesome.
dude, don't you go overlookin' Metropolis part 2!
"Home" is one of my all time faves \m/
Call it heresy, but I am not really a big fan of Metropolis Pt. 2. I listen to it from time to time, but it is not the Dream Theater I love XD
HERESY! lol
You forgot six really amazing albums:

Wrath - Lamb of God

Endgame - Megadeth

The Infection - Chimaira

Here Waits Thy Doom - 3 Inches of Blood

Infected Nations - Evile (R.I.P. Mike)

Tales from the Grave in Space - Gama Bomb
