If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The first X-Men movie was released in 1999 and is set in “the not too distant future” lets say the early 2000s, so Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey would be in their late twenties to early thirties which would mean they were each born around 1970. The first and second X-Men films have no flashbacks but X-Men The Last Stand (the third film) shows us Professor X and Magneto as young(ish) men around 1980 visiting a ten year old Jean Grey. During that flashback we see Professor X bald and walking which means he lost his ability to walk after he lost his hair, we also see a bald walking Xavier at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and we saw a young Cyclops in high school so that was set several years after the flashback in X-Men 3. During X-Men 3 we also see Xavier die and Magneto loose his powers but at the end of the movie we see Magneto’s powers start to return and Xavier’s mind inhabit the body of a brain dead guy but that’s not important. The point is that we know all these movies happen in the same timeline and so far they don’t contradict each other.
At the end of X-Men: First Class we see that Professor X was paralysed when he still had hair, so X-Men: First Class and The Last Stand obviously don’t happen in the same timeline, so there are two timelines. But the flashback to WWII at the beginning of X-Men: First Class is the same one as in the beginning of X-Men, so we know that First Class happens in the same timeline as X-Men 1 and probably X2.
We learn from watching The Wolverine that it is set after X-Men 3 which would put it in the first timeline and at the end a restored Xavier and Magneto cameo to recruit Wolverine for a new mission which is presumably the set up for X-Men Days of Future Past where Wolverine’s mind is set back in time into the body of his younger self, so Days of Future Past happens in the same timeline as The Last Stand. But we’ve seen from the panel at Comic Con that the past that Wolverine’s mind travels back into is the same timeline that First Class happens in, but that’s a different timeline! So what the hell is going on, does Wolverine’s brain travel from the future of one movie franchise into the past of another iteration of the same franchise or did Xavier somehow make friends with Magneto and get his ability to walk back between the end of First Class and the flashback in X-Men 3?
Can someone explain this to me please! I’m so confused, oh and don’t tell me I spend too much time thinking about useless crap no-one cares about I already know that!?!?
Welcome to comic book logic meets franchise reboot (First class) meets sole-adventures (Wolverine).
Also commonly known as "don't worry about it, it's never going to make sense because it's movie studios trying to get your money.
But I'm a comicbook dork this pointless crap is really important to me even though I could be doing something else! :)
Do what the rest of us have done.
Completely forget that X3: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine ever existed.
Anyone have an adamantium bullet? :)
