I just watched Apocalypse Now for the first time recently and I really enjoyed it but, I don't think that its better than my favorite Vietnam film Full Metal Jacket. I think that Full Metal Jacket is a much more grounded, realistic representation of the Vietnam war and all around just a better film. While Apocalypse Now was also very real I just cant get over that ending with a whole village of people being lead by this insane general that was always killing people. that last half hour as entertaining and well made as it was just seemed to ridiculous for me to take, especially in a film which had been so realistic to that point. maybe i'm wrong about this stuff, maybe in rare cases crazy shit like that really did happen in the war, i'm definitely not an expert. All I want is a little depth in to the ending of Apocalypse Now and your opinion on the two films.
P.S. I thought that a lot of Marlon Brando's dialog in Apocalypse Now was pointless psycho babble
Here's the thing; the first 50 minutes of Full Metal Jacket are PERFECT. R. Lee Ermey and Vincent D'Onofrio's roles make that first near hour a masterpiece. After that, the movie become simply good, not great. Apocalypse Now keeps its awesome quality throughout the whole movie, which is why I think of it as the better film.
the first half of full metal jacket was downright amazing. but overall i half to give it to apocalypse now i think its a better film. but i disagree that it was "realistic" before the ending;soldiers dont surf during an artillery barrage! a lot in that movie was exagerated but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, the movie wasn't going for an accurate depiction of the vietnam war anyway.
