Do you think at least certain comic book writers are on the same tier as some popular novelists

I love comics and I like books. The only thing which at least disturbs me when other people view reading comics or graphic novels as childish or immature. I believe there are certain comic writers that are in the same class as others who write successful books. What really ticks me off is when people who disregard comics tell me to read a actual book. They are ignorant but who knows I maybe wrong so tell me why I might be. If your in support totally would enjoy some back up too.

I'll go one further and say there are some comic writers who are better than some popular novelists.  Brian K. Vaughn comes to mind as one.  He seems to be a very versatile writer who isn't just limited by a few conventional story ideas, and I think that's what makes a writer great.  Jeff Smith does it for me, too.  A lot of popular novelists aren't really great writers so much as they are able to appeal to a certain demographic, and because of that, their sales go through the roof.  I'd present Nicholas Sparks and Stephanie Meyer as examples.
