Dear Spill: Open letter (petition) to make some changes.
Dear Spill.com,
I am really not happy with having to do this, but I think that someone has to. Will you please either hire someone full-time to act as the "Anti-Spam Agent", or simply get off of Ning? I know that I'm tired of coming to the website that I've loved for years for movie related reviews and discussion, only to be disgusted and turned away by the vast amount of Spam for "Cheap Online Drugs" (commonly referred to as "Pink Viagra".) Whoever is currently in charge of the site's membership security to block out these spam accounts isn't doing their job. I'm going to assume that it's Ning as they have been one continuous pain the ass after the next. But it's gotten to the point where they (assuming that it is Ning) have allowed so many spam accounts to sign up and flood the forums, that it's virtually impossible to hold a conversation (forum topic) for more than 15-30min or so without loosing the thread due to the spam. While I understand that there are plenty of people that enjoy the forums, I have personally been persuaded NOT to use them as often as I used to because of the vast amount of spam-accounts ruining the site.
Please, either tighten security to prevent the spam-bots from getting on so easily (Even if it's something as simple as having to wait 15min for an automated email verification), or seriously start working on breaking yourself away from Ning. It is one thing to dislike a website due to it's own incompetence or inability to provide content. It's another thing when your website is being run into the ground by 3rd party interference. As it stands right now, that's what is happening ( At least in my opinion) to this website. When it comes to content provided by Spill Crew Members, the website is still top-notch and entertaining/informative. However, the spam-bots went from an annoyance to a "on-site inside joke reference" to just a downright turn-off and aggravation that have detracted from the site's over-all enjoyment.
While I still love the audio/video reviews and podcasts that are on Spill.com. I do think that it is time to take more aggressive actions to keep the content of Spill in the hands of Spill and it's members. NOT the hands of 3rd party spam-bots that seem to hijack the participation-side (Forums) every 30min or less.

I completely agree. There was a time where these spam threads didn't bother me but not its getting ridiculous. I tried to ignore these threads thinking they would go away but I doubt this will stop. What I dont get is who is doing this. Is this some sort of a virus or is there some low life fuck face who actually makes an account just to spam this site. What I also noticed is that who ever this is, they only spam the 'Shootin The Shit' section. Something definitely needs to be done about this.

I don't know if it's ironic, or just a sign of the problem that I'm complaining about. But within 25 min of putting this topic up, yet ANOTHER spam-bot has gotten through and flooded the forums.
Sigh.... Fuck it, I'm going to bed. Later.

I wonder if the spam bots getting through the site have something to do with the pops up people get when they go on Spill....idk, I'm just guessing.

No, there may be a few reasons why you do though
A: you may have an adware virus

I don't get them, my browser/anti-virus blocks them, but it tells me that they are getting blocked. I see "pop-up blocked" and I know that there was a pop up trying to sneak its little ass into my computer. But its only on this site that the pop-up blocker has to put in any work.

hmmk, well as far as I know I don't get them but my anti-ad software is set up like that... it doesn't sound like they are that much of a hassle though.
I also just tried spill with internet explorer, there are ad's but no pop-ups that i can see...

I vote for Admins and by that I mean atleast 5 or so plus more security with account creation. As far as I know Metalvirgin is the only person that has both the power to remove spam and actually checks the forums from time to time.
also, yes it does seem strange that the spam is only affecting shooting the shit forums along with the fact that it is getting worse and worse over time...

Actually, all of our staff have the ability to do it (since we all have access to The Spill Crew joint account). Fungusmonkey, Cyrus, and Metalvirgin all "seek and destroy" throughout the day.
